Gorgui Dieng

While it might not seem like such a high bar, Gorgui Dieng is Senegal’s most impactful player. 

Dieng found his way to the big league in 2013. This happened after he was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 21st overall pick in the NBA Draft. He was then traded to the Timberwolves. The Senegalese didn’t take long at all to announce himself. In March, 2014, in a game against the Rockets, Dieng dropped 22 points and 21 rebounds, the first ever 20–20 game by a rookie in Timberwolves’ franchise history. He was definitely made for bright lights. 

No other Senegalese player has put up the numbers Dieng has managed in the league, notching up 4,591 points, 3,534 rebounds, and 837 assists in 628 games.

DeSagana Diop

DeSagana Diop’s entire legacy is built on several monumental firsts. Besides that, though, Diop’s rock-solid durability over his 12-year NBA career puts him top of our list. 

Diop grew up playing soccer in Senegal. He later switched to basketball, and moved to the U.S. to play for Oak Hill Academy. 

In 2001, Diop was drafted right out of Oak Hill Academy by the Cavs with the 8th overall pick in the 2001 NBA draft. Fun fact: he’s the first African to achieve this. On November 23, 2002, Diop dropped a career-high 10 points in a 97–84 loss to New Orleans. While the Senegalese’s offensive stats are modest at best, he was quite the defensive specialist.

His longevity saw him spend more time on the NBA roster than any other Senegalese player. That alone makes him one of the greatest NBA players from Senegal.

Tacko Fall

Tacko Fall secured a place on our list and on every NBA fans’ mind not through the usual numbers, but through a unique cultural impact and physical profile. The Senegalese is a skyscraper, standing at 7’6”. He became an overnight sensation when the world learned of his height. 

Fall was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal. As you’d expect, it wasn’t an easy trip going from the heart of Senegal to the pinnacle of basketball. This trip was made all the more difficult when the center went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft. However, he never stopped going. He’d be fortunate enough to get a spot on the Celtics team for the 2019 NBA Summer League. 

His time in the NBA Summer League did its job. He went on to sign a full-time contract with the Celtics, but his minutes and numbers in the league weren’t all that. He bounced from team to team before eventually leaving the league. 

After all this time, Fall still remains one of the most famous Senegal basketball players in the NBA globally.

Maurice Ndour 

NBA Ranking: #3721

The truth is that the modern pipeline of NBA superstars coming in from Senegal and even Africa, as a whole, has dried up over the years. One of the players who made it, and was touted to become the next big Senegalese superstar was Maurice Ndour. He definitely had all the chops to get it done, too. 

Ndour didn’t start off so great. He was undrafted in the 2015 NBA draft. The Dallas Mavericks later signed the Senegalese. That love story didn’t last too long, though, as he was subsequently waived by the Mavericks. After a whole year overseas, he found himself back in the NBA, balling for the Knicks. 

In his first start, Ndour had 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 100–91 win over the Bulls. That didn’t change much because he left New York soon after.

Pape Sow

Do you remember the name Pape Sow? Not many do because his time in the league was quite brief. 

Sow’s rookie season was quite great. He showed the kind of hunger and aggressiveness you’d expect from a newcomer. He was dropping 2.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. However, his numbers dried up in the next season. He picked up a groin injury that marred his development. Not long afterwards, he parted ways with Toronto. And with that, came the end of his NBA journey. 

Sow embodied the physical style that would become common in many Senegal players in the NBA. He only played 76 games in the NBA, but he was able to record 219 points, 214 rebounds, and 12 assists.
